Glossary of Terms
I have noticed that within Guiding we have an awful lot of Guiding-specific terminology. This glossary exists in order to help people who have no knowledge of Guiding, but who would like to know what we’re talking about!
Company – A unit of Guides
Patrol – A group of 6 to 8 girls within the Guide Company
P.L. – Patrol Leader. The leader of a Patrol of Guides
Patrol Second – Assistant to P.L. Takes the P.L’s place when the P.L. is absent
Enrolment – The ceremony at which a girl or adult makes her Promise and becomes a member of the Girl Guide Movement
Movement – A term applied to the Girl Guide organisation
Horseshoe – A ceremonial formation used by Guides
Guider – Adult Leader in Guiding
WAGGGS – World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts
GGASA – Girl Guides Association of South Africa
B.P. – Initials of Lord Baden-Powell, the founder of Boy Scouts and Girl Guides
